Synchron is Australia’s largest privately owned financial advice group with over 500 Authorised Representatives across Australia. They are an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL) holder and provide licenses to financial planners. An Australian Financial Services License holder or AFSL is required to conduct a financial services business in Australia. The license is issued by ASIC (Australian Securities and Investment Commission). Any organisation or individual cannot provide financial advice unless they hold in AFSL. An AFSL authorises it’s licensees to:

  • provide financial advice to clients
  • deal in a financial product
  • make a market for a financial product
  • operate a registered scheme
  • provide a custodial or depository services
  • provide traditional trustee company services.

The AFSL holder will disclose what they are able to provide advice in as part of the initial meeting/appointment. For example, financial planners will have a list of the products and services that are able to provide advice on in their Financial Services Guide (FSG).

ASIC also provides a list of all the people that are Authorised to provide advice, what areas or products they are authorised to provide advice on and AFSL history. The ASIC Financial Advisers register can be found here https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/investing/financial-advice/financial-advisers-register
